Who We Are
The Buffalo Meatheads are a creative, outgoing and food-crazy family from the South Buffalo area in Western New York. The competition team started sometime in 2006 when a few of the uncles and dads heard of a competition held in Clarence, NY (Oinktoberfest). It was explained by the event host that it was a place for guys who liked to barbeque to come and compete against other "Backyard" cooks. A few of the guys got together and thought it might be a good idea to compete and see just how well they could do, and entered under the name 'Meatheads'. After a 2nd place finish in chicken wings, they knew they had what it took to become a competitive force in the BBQ world, and haven't missed an Oinktoberfest since!
In 2007, several members began to improve their knowledge of barbeque and all the nuances that go along with being a competitive team. Several members became KCBS certified judges, and everyone began to acquire new grills, smokers, tools, recipes and techniques for making the best ribs, brisket and pork. With the family getting together nearly every weekend in the summer, the team had the perfect chance to perfect their skills.
In 2008, at Oinktoberfest, the Meatheads took 1st Place in KCBS Chicken, and solidified their position as a top BBQ team in the area. Along with the KCBS honors, the Meatheads were named Most Congenial team, for their inclusive and inviting personalities, a trademark of the team and the family philosophy. Following this win, they began to branch out, picking up more tips and tricks, and expanding the team's equipment to include several smokers, a tent, matching aprons and a banner bearing the team name.
2009 was another break-out year for the team. The Buffalo Meatheads had the honor of competing in the new Boston Hills Competition and while there were no wins at KCBS, the NEBS competition showed several placements including Chicken and Brisket. Rising in confidence, the family rallied behind the Meatheads, encouraging them to ride the momentum into Oinktoberfest. There, they performed reasonably well, finishing in the top 25% of the field during the KCBS competition. They also finished 4th overall and only a few points shy of Reserve Grand Champion at the Backyarder competition, placing 2nd in Pork, 3rd in Side Dish, 4th in Chilli and 3rd in Dessert. With the 2010 BBQ season coming up, the team is prepared this year to compete in the Empire State Championship, traveling to Rochester and Brockport as well as competing locally in Clarence and Boston.
At the core of the Buffalo Meatheads team, there are some things more important than winning. The first and foremost is the support and love of the family, without which there would be no team. Also, our reasons for grilling, smoking, cooking and eating stem from our love of people, comraderie and fun. Lastly, it's most important to us to see people enjoying their time, because of our work. Whether it's a sampling at a competition, or a pig roast we've put on, catering to events big and small, we love to see people smiling and happy with our efforts, and makes us proud to be who we are.
